KAJIAN SAINTIFIK PENYELIDIKAN RUMPAI LAUT SABAH

Assalamualaikum & Salam Sejahtera.

b) Serat Tidak Larut – 6.80% – Cellouse, Mannans.
Faedah Dan Aplikasi
Manakala kesan Serat Tidak Larut lazimnya mempercepatkan pergerakan saluran penghadaman.
Serat Pejal – 5.91%
Seperti kanji Floridean, Iso-Floridoside, Sorbitol.
Faedah Dan Aplikasi

2.  Comparison of Tamoxifen with Edible Seaweed (Eucheuma cottonii  L.) Extract in Suppressing Breast Tumor.

Source

a Institute of Bioscience , University Putra Malaysia , 43400 Serdang , Selangor , Malaysia.

Abstract

The tropical seaweed (Eucheuma cottonii L.) is rich in nutrients and polyphenolic compounds that may suppress cancer through its antioxidant and antiproliferative properties. The study reports on rat mammary tumor suppression and tissue antioxidant status modulation by E. cottonii ethanol extract (ECE). The effect of orally administered ECE (100 mg/kg body-weight) was compared with that of tamoxifen (10 mg/kg body-weight). Rat was induced to develop mammary tumor with subcutaneous injection of LA-7 cells (6 × 10(6) cells/rat). The ECE was more effective than tamoxifen in suppressing tumor growth (27%), improving tissues (plasma, liver, and kidney) malondialdehyde concentrations, superoxide dismutase activity and erythrocyte glutathione concentrations (P < 0.05). Unlike tamoxifen, the ECE displayed little toxicity to the liver and kidneys. The ECE exhibited strong anticancer effect with enzyme modulating properties, suggesting its potential as a suppressing agent for mammary gland tumor.

3. Eucheuma cottoni - A potential natural treatment for breast cancer
The seaweed used in this remarkable study was Eucheuma cottonii L., an edible, tropical seaweed which grows naturally within about 20 degrees of the equator and is most commonly found around Southeast Asia. The Euchema group of seaweeds is already widely commercially farmed for use in the production of carrageenan. Researchers at the University Putra Malaysia harvested the seaweed from the coastal waters of North Borneo during January. The seaweed was shade dried for three days and extracted using an 80 percent ethanol solution which was then evaporated to leave a dry powder extract. The extract was found to be rich in iodine, quercetin, catechin, rutin, carotenoids, and more exotic antioxidants such as phytopheophylin and phlorotannins.

To test the extract against breast cancer, Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with LA-7 breast cancer cells and divided into three groups: one group was not treated at all, the second was treated with the most commonly used breast cancer chemo drug at 10 mg/kg body weight, and the third group was treated with the seaweed extract at 100 mg/kg body weight. According to the researchers, this dose is equivalent to giving a 50 kg woman an 800 mg tablet of the seaweed extract.

27 percent more effective than chemo while improving antioxidant status

Rats treated with the chemo drug for four weeks showed a 71 percent decrease in the size of their tumors, but those treated with the seaweed extract had their tumors shrink by 91 percent - an improvement of 27 percent over chemo. The chemo drug also caused significant toxicity to the rats' kidneys and livers, causing visible lesions on those organs. Not only did the seaweedshow no toxicity (no liver or kidney lesions), it actually improved the rats' antioxidant status. MDA (malondialdehyde) is a key marker of oxidative stress, with higher MDA levels indicating increased oxidative damage (MDA levels often rise with cancer). Treatment with the chemo drug decreased rats' MDA levels by 27 percent, but again, the seaweed performed better and decreased MDA levels by 46 percent. Conversely, an important marker of antioxidant status is the glutathione level in erythrocytes (red blood cells), with higher glutathione levels indicating improved antioxidant status. Chemo treated rats saw their levels drop by 57 percent. But glutathione levels actually increased by 78 percent in seaweed treated rats - showing a sizable advantage for antioxidant status.

Seaweed for cancer - an established history

Various seaweeds have been used for centuries in Chinese and Japanese traditional medicine against breast cancer. Epidemiological studies have also showed that daily seaweed consumption may dramatically lower breast cancer risk, and is considered one reason why Japanese women have 83 percent less breast cancer than those in the West. More recently, a clinical trial in the U.S. showed that just five grams per day of dried seaweed (Undaria) decreased levels of a key pro-cancer protein (uPAR) by 47 percent in postmenopausal women.

This new study provides yet more good science to the case for using seaweed against breast cancer. And while this latest seaweed still must be proven out in human patients, it is impressive that the effective dose is likely attainable in human patients, using the extract of a seaweed which has been routinely eaten by Malaysian locals for decades with apparently no ill effects.

5. Radiant skin solutions
by Helene Larson11 Mar 2013
Mother Nature is a constant source of power and delight when it comes to fixing skin problems. Here are seven new beautifying botanicals you need to know about.

1. Baobab

Long used in traditional African medicine, baobab – which means “Tree of Life” – contains six and four times more vitamin C than oranges and kiwifruit, respectively. The fruit contains bioflavonoids which are excellent for preserving skin elasticity; however, it is the seed oil’s exceptionally high content of protein, essential fatty acids and vitamins A, D, and E which makes it so valuable in regenerating skin and stimulating new cell production. European studies indicate that the leaf and bark extracts also increase cellular activity and longevity, brightening and toning skin.

2. Grapeseed
“Unlike other oils, grapeseed oil is light, easily absorbed, and creates a protective layer to lock in moisture,” says Janice Cox, author of Natural Beauty at Home. Both the oil and extract are high in vitamin E, flavonoids, linoleic acid, and antioxidant polyphenols, which protect cells from the free radicals that are created in the body when we are exposed to toxins, and which cause collagen breakdown, leading to sagging and wrinkles. Grapeseed also has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antifungal andantiviral properties, making it helpful in products for blemished skin; plus, it acts as a preservative, making it an alternative to conventional preservatives like parabens.

3. Glutathione
Scientists call this ‘the master antioxidant’, because it is the leading antioxidant produced naturally in the body and plays a critical role as an immune-booster and detoxifier. Used topically, it protects skin, stimulates cell growth, and possibly reverses signs of ageing. It is well known, especially in Asia, as a skin lightener. The topical form, l-glutathione, is found in soaps, lotions and creams that even skin tone, remove dry, rough patches, and have a brightening effect.

4. Marine collagen
One age-old secret of Japanese women’s porcelain skin is said to be marine collagen, derived from algae. Marine plants are 10 times richer in minerals and trace elements than land plants, making them useful for boosting skin’s moisture content, leading to a more youthful appearance. They contain type III collagen, which is what gives young skin its firmness; over time, type III collagen is depleted and replaced with the more abundant, harder type I collagen. Marine collagen encourages skin renewal, collagen production and cell turnover and longevity, reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

5. Hempseed oil

Cold-pressed from the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa, not the illegal C. indica), this light-textured, non-greasy oil is particularly high in the essential fatty acids linoleic and linolenic acid, the antioxidants vitamin E and beta-carotene, and skin-clarifying minerals sulphur, magnesium, and phosphorus. Hempseed oil helps repair and strengthen skin by stimulating collagen growth, reducing redness, healing blemishes and preventing further breakouts, and improving skin’s ability to retain moisture; it should be part of every woman’s skin-care regime.
6. Macadamia nut oil
This is expressed from the nuts, which are high in fat as well as the skin-supportive minerals calcium, phosphorus, selenium and zinc, and is highly beneficial for skin. It is extremely nourishing, contains palmitic and oleic acids which give it unusually high skin-penetrative qualities, and just so happens to be the plant oil which is most compatible with human skin. Its rich texture makes it particularly suitable in products for sensitive, dry or easily irritated skin, as well as suncare and deep
hair-conditioning formulas, and treatments for heal blemishes, scars, and skin injuries.

7. Noni juice

This comes from the tropical fruit Morinda citrifolia. Already well known as a health tonic, noni creates xeronine in the body, which is effective in repairing damaged skin cells, and is a good source of linoleic, linolenic, and arachidonic essential fatty acids, which all support skin healing and repair. Noni also contains glycerol and butyric acid, which counter excessively dry, leathery skin, and scopoletin, which is an excellent anti-inflammatory. Miranda Kerr, who features noni juice in her organic skincare range KORA, says: “I consider noni one of my best-kept health and beauty secrets. It is a core ingredient in KORA and my inspiration for the brand.”
